Chevron Eyes New Gas Opportunities in Bangladesh

Chevron is looking to expand its footprint in Bangladesh by targeting new onshore gas assets it believes hold untapped potential.

The U.S. energy giant has expressed interest in exploring parts of Blocks 11 and 12, located in the country’s northeast. These areas are believed to be rich in natural gas but are reportedly being reserved for Bangladesh’s state-run oil and gas company, Bapex.

Chevron’s interest was made official during a recent visit to Dhaka by Javier La Rosa, the company’s new president of base assets and emerging countries. During the visit, La Rosa met with Power and Energy Advisor Fouzul Kabir Khan to discuss the company’s proposal and potential cooperation.

Chevron already has a significant presence in Bangladesh, operating several producing gas fields. However, the company appears keen to deepen its involvement amid rising domestic energy demand and growing interest in regional gas development.

Industry observers say Chevron’s renewed interest in Bangladesh reflects broader efforts by international oil companies to secure upstream opportunities in gas-rich, underexplored regions. If approved, the company’s entry into Blocks 11 and 12 could unlock new investment and technology for Bangladesh’s energy sector.

The government has yet to officially respond to Chevron’s request.
