China Launches Nation’s Largest and Most Efficient Gas-Fired Power Plant

China has officially brought its newest gas-fired power station, the Anji Power Plant in Zhejiang province, into full operation, making it the country’s largest and most efficient facility of its kind.

The plant, developed by China Energy Investment Corp. (CHN Energy) with co-investment from Sinopec, features two 843-megawatt gas steam combined-cycle units, giving it a total capacity of 1.686 gigawatts.

The units utilize advanced 9H-class gas turbine technology, along with innovative combustion and control systems, achieving efficiency levels roughly 17 percent higher than comparable coal-fired plants.

Environmental gains are substantial. Carbon dioxide emissions per kilowatt-hour are cut by around 60 percent compared with coal plants of similar size, while nitrogen oxide emissions remain more than 50 percent below national standards.

The plant is projected to generate approximately 7 billion kilowatt-hours annually, enough to power the homes of roughly 6 million people. It will also save an estimated 680,000 tons of standard coal and reduce carbon emissions by nearly 1.86 million tons each year.

Sinopec will provide stable gas supplies to support the plant’s operations, ensuring a reliable energy output while contributing to China’s broader environmental targets.

The Anji Power Plant highlights China’s push toward cleaner energy solutions, combining cutting-edge technology with significant emissions reductions.
