The Federal Government has opened talks with China’s BAIC Motor Corporation Limited to explore battery swap technology as part of Nigeria’s clean energy and electric mobility ambitions.
The engagement, aimed at boosting clean transportation and cutting carbon emissions, was disclosed by Dr. Mustapha Abdullahi, Director-General of the Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN), via a post on X (formerly Twitter).
“I was pleased to host intermediary consultants from BAIC Motor Corporation at the Commission’s headquarters. Our discussions focused on introducing BAIC’s innovative battery swap technology, setting the stage for deeper collaboration,” Dr. Abdullahi stated.
Battery swap systems are already gaining traction globally, especially in China, where EV maker Nio has built over 3,300 battery swap stations. Battery giant CATL has also partnered with Sinopec to expand China’s battery-swapping network.
Dr. Abdullahi emphasized that partnerships like this are critical for Nigeria’s transition to clean energy. “We remain committed to fostering innovation and sustainability through strategic collaborations,” he said.
The meeting was attended by several stakeholders, including Dr. Silas Agara (Director-General, National Directorate of Employment), Ambassador Nicholas Agbo, Mr. Madisah Haruna, Mr. George Anuga (SAN), and BAIC representatives Mr. Tan Jian Alex and Mr. Lv Haiming.
This move aligns with the broader goals of the Renewed Hope Agenda, which targets economic growth, environmental sustainability, and energy innovation.
In March 2025, the FG approved a N151.9 billion package for electric buses, tricycles, and charging stations in the North-East — further signaling its commitment to green mobility.
If successful, the partnership with BAIC could pave the way for local battery swap infrastructure, reduce vehicle charging delays, and stimulate local EV manufacturing in Nigeria.
