The Rural Electrification Agency (REA) says it’s working to raise $1.6 billion to boost clean energy in rural communities across Nigeria.
Speaking in Abuja, REA boss Abba Aliyu said the money will come from international partners and the private sector to support solar mini-grids and off-grid systems. About $200 million is expected from Japan, while another $50 million may come from the U.S. as recovered funds.
He said private energy companies have already brought in over $2 billion in clean energy investments and will play a key role in reaching off-grid areas.
Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa praised the collaboration and said his state is already investing in solar mini-grids and offering tax breaks to attract investors. He also called for local solar equipment manufacturing to create jobs and reduce import costs.
