FG Rolls Out ₦100bn Solar Power Plan for Public Institutions

The federal government has launched a nationwide solar power programme aimed at supplying clean, reliable energy to public institutions while reducing fuel costs and cutting governance expenses.

Known as the National Public Sector Solarisation Initiative (NPSSI), the scheme was officially unveiled on Thursday after key government agencies signed a memorandum of understanding in Abuja. The Rural Electrification Agency (REA) will oversee the implementation, working alongside the Budget Office, Infrastructure Corporation of Nigeria (InfraCorp), and the Ministry of Finance Incorporated (MOFI).

Phase Zero of the project—fully funded with ₦100 billion from the federal budget—will see solar systems installed in critical facilities such as schools, hospitals, security posts, and government offices. Later stages are expected to attract private sector financing, both local and international, through innovative funding models that reduce dependence on sovereign guarantees.

REA’s managing director, Abba Aliyu, described NPSSI as a key step in Nigeria’s clean energy transition, promoting local manufacturing, innovation, and sustainability. He highlighted its role in cutting reliance on diesel, shrinking the public sector’s carbon footprint, and fostering inter-agency collaboration.

Budget Office director general, Dr. Tanimu Yakubu, said the initiative would help bridge the country’s energy gap while improving fiscal efficiency. InfraCorp’s CEO, Dr. Lazarus Angbazo, noted that the plan represents a shift from decades of exclusive public funding towards blended investment strategies.

MOFI’s representative, Dr. Femi Ogunseinde, stressed the need for energy solutions that move away from costly fossil fuels and deliver affordable, sustainable power without heavy government guarantees.

The NPSSI aims to phase out diesel generators in public sector facilities, reduce electricity costs, create local jobs, and drive Nigeria’s ambition to become a renewable energy leader in Africa.
