Former Minister of Power, Saleh Mamman, has started serving a 75-year prison sentence after being moved to the Kuje Correctional Centre in Abuja following the execution of a Federal High Court judgment.
The development came after the ruling of the Federal High Court in Abuja, where the minister was found guilty of large-scale misappropriation of public funds. The case was prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, which alleged that billions of naira meant for public projects were diverted under his watch.
Justice James Omotosho ordered that the sentence take immediate effect, leading to Mamman’s transfer to prison custody shortly after he was brought before the court.
Alongside the jail term, the court also considered fresh requests from prosecutors seeking the seizure of additional properties believed to be linked to the convicted former minister. The assets include residential and commercial buildings located in Abuja and Kaduna, which authorities claim are proceeds from illegal activity.
During proceedings, questions also emerged around Mamman’s absence from earlier stages of the trial. He was previously sentenced in absentia after failing to appear in court for the final phase of his case, before later being arrested by EFCC operatives in Kaduna.
The court further reviewed issues surrounding his legal representation, noting that his counsel was not present during the forfeiture hearing. Despite this, the judge emphasized the need to ensure due process and adjourned the asset recovery application to allow him respond adequately.
Mamman, who was convicted on May 13, 2026, over the misappropriation of about ₦33.8 billion, remains in custody as further proceedings on asset forfeiture are expected to continue in the coming weeks.
