Fuel Subsidy: House of Reps Now Get Minimum N1 Billion for Projects

A prominent APC chieftain in Osun State, Ayodele Asalu, has revealed a sharp increase in constituency project funds allocated to federal lawmakers following the removal of the fuel subsidy last year.

Speaking at a recent APC meeting, Asalu claimed that no member of the House of Representatives now receives less than N1 billion for their constituency projects, a significant jump from less than N200 million previously. Senators, he added, receive a minimum of N2 billion.

“Before 2024, it wasn’t like this,” Asalu said. “But after subsidy removal, federal allocations to states increased—and so did lawmakers’ project funds.”

He linked the rise directly to higher federal allocations to states since the subsidy’s removal, stressing that the funds are meant for constituency projects to benefit local communities, not personal use by lawmakers.

Taking Osun State as an example, Asalu stated, “An Honourable member’s allowance was less than N200 million. Today, nobody gets less than N1 billion. And no senator operates with less than N2 billion.

These are facts, not exposés.”The APC chieftain credited President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration for this increase, suggesting it aims to boost grassroots development through empowered lawmakers.

Although the timeframe for these allocations wasn’t specified, constituency project funds are generally disbursed annually.
