Tragedy struck in Onitsha, Anambra State, on Sunday as a gas explosion at a plumbing market claimed one life and left six others injured.
The explosion occurred in a welder’s shop when a gas cylinder reportedly overheated and exploded, causing panic in the bustling commercial hub.An eyewitness at the scene recounted, “The victims were in the welder’s shop when the welding gas cylinder exploded due to exposure to excess heat.”
Confirming the incident, Anambra Police Public Relations Officer, Tochukwu Ikenga, described the explosion as “regrettable,” adding that the deceased has been deposited at a local morgue.
“The rescued victims are currently receiving treatment at the hospital,” Ikenga stated. He also noted that the Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu, has urged the public to carry out regular inspection and maintenance of gas-related equipment to prevent future tragedies.
The explosion has reignited safety concerns in densely populated markets where flammable substances are commonly used without adequate safety protocols.
