Ikeja Electric Plc has stepped up efforts to enhance safety and professionalism in Nigeria’s power sector by training more than 100 young electricians and field technicians on modern safety procedures and industry standards.
The training, held in Lagos on Tuesday, was organised in collaboration with the Licensed Electrical Contractors Association of Nigeria (LECAN). The one-day programme, themed “Electrical Safety and Best Practices in the Electricity Industry,” focused on hands-on learning in areas such as proper installation methods, risk management, and integration of alternative power systems.
Lagos State Chairman of LECAN, Bada Waheed, said the initiative highlights the need for stronger cooperation between utility firms and professional associations to ensure a safer and more efficient power industry. “Our young electricians are the backbone of the future energy workforce,” Waheed said. “Equipping them with practical skills and safety awareness helps bridge the gap between classroom learning and real-world application.”
Speaking at the event, Ikeja Electric’s Head of Corporate Communications, Kingsley Okotie, said the company identified a gap in safety knowledge among technicians, which led to the partnership with LECAN. “Electricity is powerful but unforgiving when handled carelessly,” he said. “Through this training, we are reinforcing our zero-harm culture and empowering participants to perform their jobs responsibly and safely.”
He added that the programme aligns with Ikeja Electric’s broader mission to create safer communities and reduce electrical accidents within its service areas.
One of the participants, Makinde Adeyinka, described the session as “enlightening,” noting that it improved his understanding of safe installation practices and new technologies in power distribution.
The training forms part of Ikeja Electric’s continuous investment in youth empowerment, workplace safety, and capacity building — a move the company says is vital for the sustainable growth of Nigeria’s electricity industry.
