The Federal High Court in Abuja has given reasons for placing four bank accounts linked to former Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) chief, Mele Kyari, under restriction.
Justice Emeka Nwite said the decision followed an application by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), which sought an ex parte order to block the accounts while investigations continue. The affected Jaiz Bank accounts, registered in Kyari’s name as well as the Guwori Community Development Foundation and its Flood Relief arm, reportedly contain about ₦661.4 million.
According to the EFCC, freezing the funds was necessary to safeguard evidence and ensure a smooth probe. After reviewing the motion and attached documents, Justice Nwite ruled that the application had merit and approved it.
The judge also set September 23 for a report on who owns the funds in the accounts.
Kyari, who was dismissed in April 2025 by President Bola Tinubu and replaced with Bayo Ojulari, has faced corruption allegations since leaving office. The former NNPCL boss has, however, denied any wrongdoing.
The latest ruling adds to the growing legal troubles surrounding his tenure at the helm of the national oil company.
