The Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) in Kaduna has taken a major leap toward energy sustainability with the commissioning of a cutting-edge 2.5-megawatt hybrid solar power plant and an additional 600-kilowatt photovoltaic project.
The initiative was celebrated by both the academy and government officials, who praised its impact on national security, education, and environmental progress.
The 2.5MW plant was funded through a collaboration between the World Bank and the Ministry of Power via the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), while the 600KW project was fully financed by the Ministry of Power.
According to Bolaji Tunji, spokesman for the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, the project will slash the NDA’s reliance on the national grid by 50%, ensuring steady electricity for military training, academics, and operations.
Expressing his excitement, NDA Commandant Maj. Gen. A.K. Ibrahim said:”This project propels us to uphold our legacy as Nigeria’s crown jewel of military excellence. With pride, we celebrate President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s visionary leadership and the federal government’s bold strides in energy security.”
Power Minister Adebayo Adelabu added:”Powering the NDA with solar energy fortifies national assets, drives education, security, and sustainability. Under President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, we’re lighting up Nigeria’s future—one institution at a time.”
The landmark commissioning underscores Nigeria’s push toward clean energy adoption, energy independence, and support for critical infrastructure.
