Nigeria has solidified its position as the top African exporter of crude oil to the United States, shipping over half of the continent’s oil to the American market between January and August 2025.
Data released by the US Mission in Nigeria shows that the country exported 33.23 million barrels of crude oil to the US during this period, with a total value of approximately $2.57 billion. The figures highlight Nigeria’s strong foothold in the African oil sector and its growing significance in transatlantic trade.
The US Mission emphasized that the volume of exports reflects the robust economic relationship between the two nations, noting that this partnership supports job creation and shared prosperity on both sides.
Beyond oil, trade between Nigeria and the US is expanding in other areas. For instance, agricultural trade between the two countries is projected to reach $700 million in 2025, according to Chris Bielecki, the US Agricultural Counsellor.
Interestingly, Nigeria’s imports of crude oil from the US also surged by 153% in the first nine months of 2025, underscoring the increasingly reciprocal nature of energy trade between the two countries.
