Nigeria has retained its position as Africa’s top oil producer in June 2025, according to new figures released by the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC). The report, which tracked oil production across member countries, shows that Libya secured the second spot, while Algeria held steady in third.
OPEC data reveals that Nigeria pumped approximately 1.547 million barrels of oil per day during the month—a 19,000-barrel increase from May. Despite experiencing a slight drop in production by 24,000 barrels, Libya followed with 1.280 million barrels daily. Algeria produced 927,000 barrels per day, maintaining its previous output level.
The report links the overall rise in output to an uptick in global oil prices in June. This price improvement reportedly encouraged higher production in several oil-reliant African economies, particularly those where oil remains a critical component of national revenue.
Libya’s performance, although slightly lower than the previous month, remains strong given the country’s ongoing recovery in oil infrastructure and renewed political stability. These factors have helped the country stay competitive in the continental oil market.
OPEC’s findings come amid broader developments in Libya’s energy sector, including international investment interest and reactivation of dormant oil wells—signs that the country’s oil industry could see further expansion in the coming months.
