Despite ongoing energy challenges and sector reforms, several African countries offer some of the cheapest petrol prices globally in May 2025. Libya leads the continent with the lowest fuel cost at just $0.027 per litre, followed by Angola and Algeria.
Nigeria ranks 5th in Africa and 12th worldwide, with petrol priced at $0.532 per litre.According to GlobalPetrolPrices.com, Libya’s low prices are driven by abundant oil reserves and subsidised energy policies, despite political instability. “Libya continues to leverage its resources to provide low-cost energy for its population,” the report notes.
Angola and Algeria also benefit from domestic oil production, maintaining relatively affordable prices despite fiscal pressures. Egypt and Nigeria strike a balance between subsidies and production, helping keep fuel accessible for millions. Nigeria’s price reflects ongoing subsidy reforms and challenges with supply shortages.
Other African countries with low petrol prices include Sudan ($0.700), Tunisia ($0.840), Liberia ($0.871), Ethiopia ($0.927), and Gabon ($1.020) per litre, reflecting a mix of local production, subsidies, and import reliance.
Fuel affordability remains critical for economic stability across Africa, especially where alternative energy options are limited. The report highlights, “Low fuel prices in Africa ensure economic stability where energy options are few.”
