Maryamu Idris, Managing Director of NNPC Trading Limited, has been appointed as Nigeria’s National Representative to the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) announced on Wednesday.
With the new role, Idris will be responsible for championing Nigeria’s interests in the global oil cartel, particularly on issues around production levels, price stability, and energy transition.
NNPC highlighted her wealth of experience in the petroleum sector, noting her previous work leading pricing and valuation in the Crude Oil Marketing Division, advising Nigeria’s OPEC delegation, and playing key roles in industry reforms and transparency initiatives such as EITI.
Idris holds a degree in Economics from the University of Abuja and a Master’s in Energy Economics from the University of Dundee, Scotland.
She is also joining OPEC’s Economic Commission Board, where she will contribute to technical policy discussions and coordinate closely with Nigeria’s OPEC Governor, the Ministry of Petroleum Resources, and regulators like the NUPRC to align national priorities with OPEC decisions.
Her appointment comes at a crucial time, as Nigeria seeks to maintain compliance with its current OPEC quota while pushing for adjustments that reflect its real production capacity.
Analysts believe her presence at OPEC will help strengthen Nigeria’s voice within the organisation and reinforce the country’s commitment to active participation in shaping global oil policies.
