The Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) has clarified that no final decision has been made regarding the allocation of disputed crude oil and gas wells to specific oil-producing states.
In a statement released on Sunday, RMAFC Chairman Dr. Mohammed Shehu described recent media reports suggesting that certain wells had been earmarked for ceding as “misleading and premature.” He emphasized that the commission has not concluded its review or made any recommendations.
The clarification came after the commission received a draft report from the Inter-Agency Committee on the Verification of Coordinates of Disputed Crude Oil and Gas Wells on February 13, 2026. The draft is currently under review by key stakeholders, including the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission, the National Boundary Commission, and the Office of the Surveyor General of the Federation.
Once the technical and statutory agencies provide their feedback, the matter will undergo further scrutiny by RMAFC’s internal committees covering crude oil, gas, investment, and legal matters before final recommendations are presented to the commission’s plenary session. The ultimate report will then be forwarded to the President and the Attorney-General of the Federation for consideration in line with legal and constitutional requirements.
Dr. Shehu reiterated the importance of following due process, urging media organizations, stakeholders, and the public to disregard speculative reports until official communications are issued.
Earlier, in January 2026, RMAFC had called on affected oil-producing states to actively participate in plotting verified coordinates for disputed and newly drilled wells. According to the commission, active state involvement is crucial for producing an outcome acceptable to all parties while ensuring impartiality.
The commission emphasized its commitment to transparency and adherence to established procedures in handling matters of national significance, assuring that decisions will be based on comprehensive technical and legal assessments.
