Oando to Build Nigeria’s First Solar Panel Plant

Oando PLC has announced plans to build Nigeria’s first-ever solar panel assembly plant. The company shared the update in its latest financial report, revealing that land for the project has already been secured and financial planning is complete.

The 1.2-gigawatt plant will not only produce solar panels but also feature a recycling section to process old or damaged panels into reusable materials.

Oando Clean Energy is partnering with the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) on the project. At the signing of their agreement, Oando Clean Energy CEO, Demola Ogunbanjo, said the plant will boost clean energy in Africa and help reduce waste through its recycling efforts.

REA’s Managing Director, Abba Aliyu, called the partnership a “game-changer,” saying it will improve access to electricity and help Nigeria become a leader in renewable energy.

The first phase of the project — a 600 MW assembly line — is expected to roll out in 2026. Oando says this move will increase local manufacturing, create jobs, and improve access to clean energy across the country.

In addition to the solar project, Oando is also working on electric buses and other clean energy efforts. So far this year, its electric buses have already helped reduce over 42,000 kg of carbon emissions.

The company also reported a strong start to 2025, with a major boost in oil production and earnings. It plans to spend up to $270 million this year on energy projects, drilling, and infrastructure upgrades all aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s energy future.
