OPEC is considering another major hike in oil production for June, following a surprise output increase in May that rattled the market and deepened internal tensions.
According to Reuters, three insiders revealed that “several OPEC members will propose another round of output hikes” when eight OPEC+ nations meet on May 5.
This comes after the bloc raised output by 411,000 barrels per day for May—three times more than initially planned.
The unexpected surge in supply, alongside an escalating US-China trade war, sent oil prices tumbling to their lowest level in four years this April.
“There’s pressure to keep increasing output,” one source said, “but not everyone’s on board, especially those sticking to the agreed quotas.”
Neither OPEC nor Saudi authorities have commented on the brewing discord. The proposed move may further strain relations within OPEC+, as members debate whether to prioritize market share or price stability.
