Petroleum Engineers Call on FG to Target 2.7 Million Barrels Daily Oil Output by 2030

The Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) has called on the Nigerian government to adopt bold strategies aimed at boosting the country’s daily crude oil production to 2.7 million barrels by the year 2030.

Dr. Amina Danmiani, Chairperson of the SPE Nigeria Council, made the appeal during a media briefing in Lagos ahead of the upcoming 2025 edition of the SPE Nigeria Annual International Conference and Exhibition (SPENAICE), which runs from August 4 to 6.

Danmiani noted that Nigeria’s current oil production, including condensates, hovers around 1.75 million barrels per day, stressing the need for investment in enhanced recovery methods, stronger infrastructure, and improved gas utilisation as part of the roadmap to achieving the 2.7mbpd goal.

She further emphasized that Nigeria’s 209 trillion cubic feet of proven gas reserves present a major opportunity to drive energy growth, boost domestic supply, and support economic diversification.

Speaking on recent industry developments, Danmiani referenced the ongoing exit of international oil firms from onshore and shallow water fields, describing it as a pivotal moment that demands strategic local action. She expressed optimism that SPENAICE 2025 would serve as a critical platform to shape Nigeria’s energy transition path.

This year’s conference theme, “Building a Sustainable Energy Future: Leveraging Technology, Supply Chain, Human Resources, and Policy”, will focus on uniting innovation, policy, and local expertise to overcome sector challenges. Over 4,000 participants and 80 exhibitors are expected to attend.

Danmiani also underlined the importance of mentoring emerging talent in the energy space and promoting indigenous participation in the face of shifting industry dynamics.

In a related development, NNPC Limited has announced plans to raise daily oil production to 2 million barrels by 2027. The Group Chief Executive Officer, Bashir Bayo Ojulari, disclosed this at the recent OPEC Seminar in Vienna, stating that current output stands at 1.63 million barrels per day. He added that NNPC also targets a gas output increase from 7 billion to 10 billion cubic feet per day within the same timeframe.
