Petronas, ExxonMobil Begin Gas Production at Malaysia’s Bindu Field

Malaysia’s state-owned Petronas, through its upstream arm Petronas Carigali, has officially started gas production at the Bindu field located about 210 kilometers offshore Terengganu.

The project includes a new wellhead facility, Bindu A, which is linked to the Guntong E processing hub through a 62-kilometer pipeline. The platform was locally built by Muhibbah Energy and is designed to be unmanned, running on solar power to cut operational emissions.

According to Petronas Carigali, the Bindu field is the last major development under the current Gas Production Sharing Contract (GPSC). At full capacity, the site is expected to produce up to 75 million cubic feet of gas per day from two wells.

The field is operated by Petronas Carigali with a 50% stake, while ExxonMobil Exploration and Production Malaysia holds the remaining 50%.

Hazli Sham Kassim, Chief Executive of Petronas Carigali, said the milestone highlights the company’s ability to manage the GPSC effectively. He explained that nearly half of Peninsular Malaysia’s gas needs are met through these operations, which supply both large power plants and small manufacturers.

“This achievement reflects our technical strength and our commitment to maximizing value from Malaysia’s resources while ensuring reliable gas supply for the nation,” Kassim said.

The project also signals a step forward in Petronas’ strategy to enhance domestic gas production while supporting cleaner and more efficient energy development.
