The Golden Pass LNG project in Sabine Pass, Texas, is on track to begin production by the end of 2025, QatarEnergy CEO Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi announced.
This landmark project, a joint venture with ExxonMobil, will significantly boost QatarEnergy’s liquefied natural gas (LNG) output.Together with QatarEnergy’s North Field expansion projects, Golden Pass LNG will more than double the company’s LNG production from 77 million metric tons per annum (MMtpa) to 160 MMtpa.
Al-Kaabi stated, “QatarEnergy will be the largest single LNG exporter as a company, while Qatar, as a country, will be the second-largest exporter of LNG after the United States for a very long time.”
The first liquefaction train from the North Field East expansion is expected to start production by mid-2026, while North Field West is currently in the engineering phase, with construction planned to begin in 2027.
The joint venture, owned 70 percent by QatarEnergy and 30 percent by ExxonMobil, recently received regulatory approval from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) to commission key facilities at the Golden Pass LNG terminal, including the boil-off gas compression system, LNG storage, and liquefaction system.
Al-Kaabi highlighted the significance of the project, saying, “Golden Pass LNG is permitted to export up to 937 billion cubic feet a year of natural gas to both FTA and non-FTA countries, with permits valid until 2050.”
This milestone marks a major step in expanding global LNG supply and strengthening QatarEnergy’s position in the energy market.
