Romania is currently the largest producer of natural gas in the European Union, according to the country’s Minister of Energy, Bogdan Ivan.
Speaking in a televised interview on Digi24, Ivan said Romania produces between 21 and 23 million cubic metres of natural gas daily. He noted that the country also has storage facilities capable of holding up to 3 billion cubic metres of gas, which are presently about 68 percent full.
The minister stressed that Romania is well prepared for the winter season, regardless of weather conditions. He added that on November 1, 2025, Romania became the only EU member state to have fully utilised its gas storage capacity.
Ivan also highlighted Romania’s reduced dependence on external suppliers, stating that the country has not imported natural gas from Russia since 2023. According to him, this shift has ended years of energy pressure and strengthened national energy security.
Beyond domestic needs, Romania is positioning itself as a key regional energy player. The minister explained that the country imports liquefied natural gas from the United States, supplies gas to Moldova, and facilitates gas transit to Ukraine. These activities, he said, are carried out in a way that brings revenue to Romanian companies.
He added that Romania’s support for neighbouring countries has not affected its own energy balance, as the gas used for these operations is sourced strategically to ensure both regional cooperation and economic benefit.
