Sterling Oil Converts 90% Fleet to CNG, Plants 25,000 Trees in Climate Push

Sterling Oil Exploration and Energy Production Company Limited has taken a bold step toward environmental sustainability by converting over 90% of its vehicle fleet to compressed natural gas (CNG) and planting more than 25,000 trees as part of its climate action strategy.

The company’s efforts were recognised at the 2025 National Sustainability Achievements Awards, where it won the Outstanding Oil and Gas Company award.

The event, organised by ESG Impact Consulting Ltd., celebrates top organisations driving Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) initiatives in Nigeria under the theme: “Nigeria’s Green Transition Efforts & Climate Change Revolution.”David Walker, Head of Operations and Human Resources at Sterling Oil, said, “Sterling Oil’s conversion of its heavy and light-duty vehicles to CNG is aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions and supporting Nigeria’s shift to cleaner energy sources.”

Walker also highlighted other green initiatives: “We have modernised our marine fleet by converting operational barges to double-hull designs to protect inland waterways, and planted more than 25,000 tree seedlings, maintaining a survival rate of 60–80%.

Our recycling machines process up to 100 kilograms of waste per hour, and we have significantly reduced gas flaring by converting waste gas into usable energy.”

“Our actions go beyond industry compliance.We’re building a legacy of responsible growth and climate-conscious operations,” Walker added during the awards ceremony.

Other industry leaders recognised included Dangote Sugar, Ikeja Hotels Plc, Africa Prudential Plc, and BUA Foods, all commended for embedding sustainability into their core business practices.

Dada Ajai-Ikhile, Chairman of the Awards Organising Committee, praised the growing corporate leadership in ESG, stating, “This year’s honorees represent a new wave of climate leadership. They are not only responding to environmental challenges but shaping a greener future for Nigeria.”
