Top 10 Countries With the Most Reliable Electricity

A new assessment of electricity access across Africa highlights the countries that have made the strongest progress in delivering stable, widespread power supply to their populations. These nations stand out for long-term investment, diversified energy sources, and policies that steadily expand grid coverage.

Egypt tops the list with near-universal electricity access, achieved through decades of infrastructure upgrades and a balanced mix of hydro, natural gas, and thermal generation. Morocco follows closely, also recording full electrification, supported by its major investments in solar and wind energy.

Tunisia maintains 100 percent access as well, backed by a system historically powered by natural gas but increasingly supplemented by renewables. Algeria comes next with about 99.8 percent coverage, driven by its strong natural gas-based generation and extensive grid expansion efforts.

In Central Africa, Gabon stands out with an access rate of roughly 91.6 percent. While almost all urban residents are connected, rural communities still face gaps. Hydropower and natural gas remain Gabon’s strongest contributors to supply stability.

West Africa’s best performer on the list is Ghana, posting around 85.9 percent access. Its energy mix hydropower, gas-fired plants, and other sources reflects sustained investment in grid development. South Africa follows with about 84.4 percent access, remaining one of the continent’s most organized electricity markets despite ongoing challenges like load shedding.

Botswana ranks next with access of about 72 percent. The country shows strong urban coverage and is pushing further into renewables to support rural electrification. Kenya, with access around 71 percent, continues to leverage its diverse energy mix especially geothermal and wind to improve supply and expand connectivity.

Senegal completes the top ten at roughly 70 percent national access, buoyed by a growing portfolio of solar and wind projects that support its grid expansion plans.
