Africa’s oil landscape shows a mix of countries that produce large volumes of crude daily and those that hold huge untapped reserves. Recent data for 2025 highlight the continent’s top five oil producers in terms of both reserves and output.
- Libya
Libya tops the continent in proven oil reserves, with around 48 billion barrels. While political instability has affected production at times, its vast underground wealth makes it a key long-term player in Africa’s energy sector. - Nigeria
Nigeria ranks second in reserves with about 36.9 billion barrels and remains Africa’s largest crude producer. In 2025, daily production averaged over 1.5 million barrels, peaking at 1.78 million barrels mid-year, supported by improved security in the Niger Delta that reduced oil theft and operational downtime. - Algeria
Algeria holds roughly 12.2 billion barrels in proven reserves. Its daily output is significant, though it fluctuates month to month. Algeria’s balance of reserves and production ensures it remains a major energy player in North Africa. - Angola
Angola has around 7.8 billion barrels of reserves and is a key producer. Analysts note that Angola extracts at a faster pace relative to its reserves, which could shorten its productive lifespan without new discoveries or advanced recovery techniques. - Egypt
Egypt’s proven oil reserves stand at about 3.3 billion barrels. While its production is smaller compared to other top producers, Egypt focuses on maximizing efficiency across hydrocarbons and expanding into renewable energy to diversify its energy sector.
