Trump Revives U.S Nuclear Energy

US President Donald Trump is driving a nuclear power comeback in America, signing four executive orders aimed at accelerating advanced nuclear technology and boosting the domestic uranium industry.

Calling the energy situation an “energy emergency,” Trump is pushing nuclear energy as a key low-emissions solution while scaling back renewables like wind and solar. The orders include fast-tracking advanced reactors at military bases, promoting nuclear fuel recycling, and streamlining licensing processes.

One of the most ambitious directives demands at least one advanced reactor be operational on a US military base by September 30, 2028. It also exempts key federal nuclear projects from certain environmental reviews, a move some see as controversial.

“The orders should help unlock previously allocated federal funds, potentially catalysing private sector interest,” said Nick Amicucci from Evercore ISI.

The orders call for downsizing the Nuclear Regulatory Commission workforce while speeding up approvals — a combination experts warn could undermine safety and regulatory independence.

Despite historic challenges with costs and delays, such as the Vogtle plant in Georgia running billions over budget, industry leaders are optimistic. Curtis Moore from Energy Fuels noted that uranium prices need to rise above $100 per pound to incentivize new supply, but recent announcements sparked a rally in uranium stocks.

Justus Parmar from Fortuna Investments summarized the shift: “Nuclear is no longer just an option – it’s a necessity.”

With the US utilities running low on uranium reserves, the new policies aim to secure America’s place in the global nuclear energy race — positioning nuclear power as a strategic and climate-friendly asset.
