Trump Signals Return of U.S. Sanctions on Russian Oil

U.S. President Donald Trump has said the United States may soon reimpose sanctions on Russian oil exports as global energy markets stabilize.

Speaking at the G7 summit, Trump said previous sanctions relief was granted to help prevent disruptions to global oil supplies and keep prices under control. However, he noted that oil continues to flow through key shipping routes, including the Strait of Hormuz, making it possible for Washington to restore restrictions on Russian crude shipments.

The comments come after the U.S. extended a temporary waiver in May that allowed Russian oil cargoes already loaded onto tankers to reach their destinations. The measure was intended to protect vulnerable countries from supply shortages while minimizing disruptions in energy markets.

The issue was discussed alongside efforts to increase pressure on Moscow over its war in Ukraine. During the summit, Trump met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who called for stronger sanctions targeting Russia’s energy, banking, and military sectors.

Zelenskyy also urged Western allies to crack down on Russia’s “shadow fleet” of tankers used to bypass sanctions, saying coordinated action by the United States and Europe remains essential to increasing pressure on the Kremlin.

G7 leaders have reportedly backed tougher measures against Russia, reinforcing a united Western approach aimed at pushing Moscow toward a negotiated settlement of the conflict.
