Uganda Seeks Gas Sector Partnership With Turkmenistan

Uganda is exploring closer cooperation with Turkmenistan as it works to strengthen its emerging natural gas industry through international partnerships.

Officials of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) held talks in Kampala with a visiting delegation from the Democratic Party of Turkmenistan to discuss how both sides can collaborate in the gas sector.

The Ugandan side was led by NRM Secretary General Richard Todwong and the party’s Director for External Relations, Pollar Awich, while the Turkmen delegation was headed by Ata Serdarov.

During the meeting, Ugandan representatives pointed to Turkmenistan’s long-standing experience in natural gas production and management as a useful reference point for Uganda, which is currently developing its oil and gas resources.

Awich noted that Uganda sees valuable lessons in Turkmenistan’s energy journey that could help guide its own sectoral growth, especially as the country advances plans to commercialise its hydrocarbon reserves.

Both parties also discussed practical steps to deepen engagement, including the possibility of signing a memorandum of understanding and maintaining regular political consultations to support energy cooperation.

The dialogue signals Uganda’s intent to learn from established gas-producing nations as it positions itself for a bigger role in the regional energy landscape.
