India to Boost US Energy Imports

India is set to increase its energy imports from the United States as it seeks to meet the demands of its rapidly growing economy, said Hardeep Singh Puri, Indian Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas.

Speaking to Newsweek, Puri revealed, “India has raised its imports from the United States to between USD 15 billion and USD 20 billion annually, with potential for further growth as global oil supplies expand.”

He stressed that India’s annual energy needs total USD 150 billion, driven by the country’s rapid economic expansion.Puri added, “We have expanded our energy import sources from 27 to 40 countries, making decisions based on national interests.”

He noted a decline in Russian oil’s share from a peak of 40% in May 2024, emphasizing India’s independent energy policy under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership.

Despite the rise in consumption, Puri confirmed India’s commitment to sustainability: “We are making progress with biofuel blending at 20% and expanding green hydrogen initiatives.”

He also expressed optimism about new oil exploration, highlighting that “200,000 square kilometres have been opened for oil exploration,” including promising reserves in the Andaman Sea.

This move signals India’s strategic efforts to diversify energy sources while supporting economic growth and environmental goals.
