TotalEnergies to Turn Used Cooking Oil into Jet and Road Fuel

TotalEnergies is gearing up to produce biofuels from used cooking oil through a new long-term partnership with Quatra, the European leader in used oil collection and recycling.

Under a 15-year agreement set to begin in 2026, Quatra will supply TotalEnergies with 60,000 tonnes of used cooking oil annually. The oil will be sourced from restaurants and industries across France and Europe, then filtered and delivered to TotalEnergies’ biorefineries.

“This deal contributes to securing the feedstock to produce biodiesel and sustainable aviation fuel,” TotalEnergies stated.

Valérie Goff, Senior Vice President of Renewable Fuels & Chemicals at TotalEnergies, described the move as a key step toward the company’s low-carbon goals. “The development of biofuels is one of our company’s strategic goals,” Goff said. “By directly reducing the carbon intensity of the energy products used by our customers, we are actively working with them as part of our net zero approach.”

TotalEnergies has already converted its refineries at La Mède and Grandpuits into biorefineries. The La Mède site, operational since 2019, has a capacity of 500,000 tonnes of biofuel per year and produces France’s only HVO biodiesel. It is also set to produce sustainable aviation fuel for southern French airports this year.

Meanwhile, the Grandpuits site is being transformed into a zero-crude complex, with a biorefinery projected to produce 230,000 tonnes of sustainable aviation fuel annually starting in 2026. SARIA, a European leader in organic waste reuse, will supply most of the feedstock for Grandpuits.

Pol Van Pollaert, Co-CEO of Quatra, welcomed the partnership. “At Quatra, we believe in long-term partnerships with leading industrial groups that combine logistics, environmental responsibility and financial viability,” he said. “By supplying locally collected used cooking oil, we are contributing to a sustainable value chain.”
