Trump Backs Bill to Hit India, China with 500% Tariff Over Russian Oil Imports

U.S. President Donald Trump is considering a new sanctions bill that would slap a 500% tariff on countries such as India and China for continuing to buy oil and other energy products from Russia.

The proposed law, known as the Sanctioning Russia Act of 2025, aims to cut off funding for Russia’s war in Ukraine by penalizing nations that maintain energy trade ties with Moscow. The bipartisan bill was introduced by Senator Lindsey Graham and co-sponsored by Senator Richard Blumenthal.

At the heart of the proposal is a massive tariff on countries still purchasing Russian oil, gas, or uranium. Trump, speaking at a Cabinet meeting, confirmed he’s “strongly” reviewing the bill and said he has full authority to approve or reject it if it passes Congress.

Senator Graham praised the legislation, calling it a major step in holding Russia accountable. He warned that any country supporting Russia’s energy sector while ignoring Ukraine could face steep import penalties in the U.S.

As part of a wider trade crackdown, Trump also announced new tariffs on other countries, including a 35% tariff on Canadian goods set to take effect August 1. Additional duties were revealed for countries like the Philippines, Moldova, Libya, and Sri Lanka.

If implemented, the sanctions would mark one of the toughest economic responses by the U.S. yet, reshaping trade relationships and increasing pressure on nations that continue doing business with Russia.
