China Warns NATO Against Tariffs Over Russian Oil Trade

China has cautioned NATO members against taking punitive trade measures over its energy cooperation with Russia, warning that any such move would draw a strong response.

Foreign ministry spokesperson Lin Jian told reporters in Beijing on Monday that China’s trade and energy dealings are “lawful and above reproach,” stressing that the country will not accept external interference.

“Normal economic and energy cooperation between China and other countries, including Russia, is entirely legitimate,” Lin said. “If attempts are made to undermine China’s lawful rights and interests, we will respond firmly to safeguard our sovereignty, security, and development.”

The remarks came amid growing speculation that G7 and NATO states, under U.S. pressure, could introduce tariffs on Chinese goods linked to the purchase of Russian oil.

Beijing’s warning highlights escalating tensions between Western powers and China, which has deepened energy ties with Moscow since the outbreak of the Ukraine conflict.
