Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has called for stronger collaboration between Lagos and China in the areas of renewable energy, smart city technologies, cultural exchanges, and human capacity development.
Represented by his deputy, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, at the 76th Chinese National Day reception held in Victoria Island, the governor said such partnerships are central to Lagos’ plan of building a “Greater Lagos” that is resilient, competitive, and future-ready.
Sanwo-Olu noted that Chinese investors and institutions have played a vital role in Lagos’ growth through investments in infrastructure, trade, manufacturing, and technology. These efforts, he said, continue to create jobs, support industrial expansion, and deepen people-to-people connections between Nigeria and China.
“The story of China shows how vision and determination can transform nations,” he remarked, adding that Lagos intends to draw lessons from that experience as it accelerates its own development journey.
Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on China-Nigeria Parliamentary Relations, Jafaru Yakubu, praised the partnership, describing it as one that has delivered tangible results in education, commerce, infrastructure, and technology. He assured that Nigeria remains committed to working closely with China to build a shared future that advances peace, prosperity, and stability.
On her part, the Chinese Consul-General in Lagos, Yan Yuqing, highlighted China’s remarkable economic rise since the reforms of 1978, pointing out that the country has become the world’s second-largest economy and a global trade leader. She expressed confidence that continued collaboration with Lagos would not only boost Africa’s biggest city but also strengthen cultural ties and mutual prosperity.
