NNPC and Heirs Energies Double Gas Production, Boost Domestic Power Supply

The NNPC/Heirs Energies Joint Venture (JV) has achieved a major milestone in Nigeria’s energy sector by doubling gas output from a key well in Oil Mining Lease (OML) 17, adding 135 million standard cubic feet per day (MMscf/d) to the nation’s domestic supply.

The increase comes from a pioneering rigless recompletion of a previously underperforming gas well—a first of its kind in Nigeria. The intervention tapped an untapped reservoir interval, restoring production at only 15% of the cost of drilling a new well.

The surge in gas supply has already had a significant impact on power generation in the eastern network. Transcorp’s TransAfam Power, one of Nigeria’s major electricity producers, increased output from an average of 50 megawatts to more than 180MW, reaching peaks of 200MW. Other plants connected to the network, including First Independent Power Limited and Geometric Power, have also recorded steadier and higher output. Combined, the power plants now generate over 350MW, compared with around 100MW previously.

The boost in electricity is expected to benefit hundreds of thousands of homes and businesses, reducing blackouts while supporting hospitals, schools, factories, and other critical infrastructure.

The innovative project has received recognition from top government officials. In a letter to Heirs Energies CEO Osa Igiehon, Special Adviser to the President on Energy, Olu Verheijen, commended the team for showcasing Nigerian engineering expertise and technical innovation, pledging continued support for the expansion of operations across the sector.

NNPC’s Executive Vice President for Upstream, Udy Ntia, highlighted the project as an example of how innovation and strategic partnerships can unlock Nigeria’s gas potential. Similarly, Seyi Omotowa, Chief Upstream Investment Officer at NNPC Upstream Investment Management Services, noted the project reflects a commitment to safe, efficient, and value-driven upstream operations.

Heirs Energies CEO Igiehon praised the wholly Nigerian workforce behind the success, emphasizing the company’s dedication to supporting the country’s gas-to-power agenda through innovative, responsible, and performance-focused operations.

The OML 17 JV’s breakthrough demonstrates how technological innovation can enhance domestic gas supply, strengthen electricity generation, and drive broader economic growth in Nigeria.
