Nigeria’s downstream petroleum sector celebrated excellence at the first-ever Petroleum Prize, Recognition and Awards 2025, organized by the digital platform Petroleumprice.ng. The awards aim to highlight accountability, performance, and measurable impact within the country’s fuel industry.
Africa’s richest man and Dangote Group president, Aliko Dangote, was honored as Downstream Sector Personality of the Year for his significant influence on market dynamics and supply structure. Gabriel Ogbechie, founder of Rainoil, took home Petroleum Depot Owner of the Year, while the Major Energies Marketers Association of Nigeria (MEMAN) won Downstream Petroleum Industry Advocate of the Year.
Other notable winners included MRS Oil, awarded Best Fuel Station of the Year, and Samson Victoria of BOVAS, who was recognized as Best Female Petroleum Depot Owner of the Year.
Petroleumprice.ng explained that the awards use a hybrid evaluation model, with 60% of the scores based on votes from operators, transporters, and end-users in the downstream sector, and the remaining 40% assessed by an independent panel of industry experts. This approach is designed to reflect both real-world market experience and professional evaluation.
The platform noted that the awards were launched amid a period of major reforms in Nigeria’s downstream industry, including deregulated petrol pricing, expansion of storage infrastructure, and increased private-sector involvement. According to the organizers, the Petroleum Prize is intended to document leadership and accountability during this transformative period rather than promote individual brands.
Future editions of the awards will continue to rely on transparent scoring, public participation, and published criteria to maintain credibility and independence.
