US President Donald Trump has suggested the possibility of imposing fresh tariffs on India due to its continued purchase of Russian oil, saying that Prime Minister Narendra Modi was aware of his concerns.
Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One on Sunday, Trump emphasized that India “knew I was not happy” about the ongoing imports. He added that tariffs could be raised “very quickly” if necessary.
The comments follow a period of heightened trade tension between the US and India. Last year, Washington imposed a 25% reciprocal tariff on Indian goods, with an additional 25% penalty on imports linked to Russian oil. The measures pushed some tariffs as high as 50% in certain categories, straining bilateral relations.
Despite the pressure from Washington, India has remained firm in protecting its domestic agriculture and dairy sectors. Negotiations aimed at resolving the tariff dispute have so far stalled, with the US urging greater market access for American products.
Trump also highlighted other trade issues during a recent phone call with Modi, including concerns about Indian rice exports. “They shouldn’t be doing that… tariffs solve the problem in two minutes,” he said, according to reports.
