Nigeria Launches First Mobile Drone Command Centre to Protect Oil and Gas Pipelines

Nigeria has introduced its first commercial Mobile Drone Operations Command Centre (MDOC) to strengthen security along the country’s oil and gas pipelines. The mobile facility, unveiled at the headquarters of Nigeria LNG Limited (NLNG), represents a major step toward modern, technology-driven protection of energy infrastructure.

The MDOC, created through a partnership between NLNG and Arco Worldwide Services, is housed inside a customized, climate-controlled Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van. Its mobility allows security teams to quickly reach vulnerable pipeline sections, conduct aerial surveillance, and coordinate operations in real time.
Equipped with advanced drones, the system streams live, high-definition video to onboard monitors.

Connectivity is supported through Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites, ensuring uninterrupted communication even in remote locations where traditional cellular networks are weak or unavailable.

Industry analysts note that the deployment of the MDOC reflects a broader modernization push in Nigeria’s oil and gas sector, as companies increasingly adopt smart surveillance technologies to reduce theft, prevent vandalism, and respond faster to security threats.

The initiative highlights the growing role of homegrown technological solutions in safeguarding the country’s critical energy assets and improving operational efficiency across pipeline networks.
