Italian Oil Giant Finds Massive Gas Offshore Ivory Coast

An Italian energy company has made a major offshore discovery in Ivory Coast, uncovering up to three trillion cubic feet of natural gas and 100 million barrels of condensate—the country’s second-largest hydrocarbon find.

The new Calao South field is located in Block CI-501, where the company operates with a 90% stake alongside state-owned Petroci Holding. Drilled to a depth of over 5,000 metres in waters about 2,200 metres deep, the well revealed high-quality reservoir sands. Additional testing will determine production capacity and commercial timelines.

This discovery strengthens Ivory Coast’s energy sector, potentially supporting domestic power generation, industrial growth, and exports to neighboring countries. It builds on the country’s largest offshore project, the Baleine field, which is set to increase output and play a key role in meeting national energy needs.

For the Italian company, the find also expands its footprint in West Africa, complementing other deepwater projects in Angola, Ghana, and Nigeria. Analysts say Calao South highlights the untapped potential of West Africa’s offshore basins, attracting global energy investors seeking new gas and condensate supplies for regional and international markets.
