The United States and Israel have carried out major military strikes targeting Iran’s oil and gas facilities, raising concerns about global energy supplies. US President Donald Trump said the operation aims to prevent Iran from ever developing nuclear weapons.
In a video statement, Trump described the campaign as “a massive and ongoing operation” focused on destroying Iran’s missile industry, navy, and regional proxy networks. He warned Iranian military and police forces to surrender or face severe consequences while urging civilians to stay safe at home. Trump also encouraged the Iranian people to challenge their government and seize control of their future.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed support for the operation, stating that it could create opportunities for the Iranian people to take charge of their destiny.
The strikes directly target Iran’s energy sector, which includes 208 billion barrels of proven oil reserves and roughly 34,000 billion cubic meters of natural gas, second only to Russia. Iran currently exports about 2 million barrels of oil per day, mostly to China, and its energy infrastructure plays a critical role in global oil and gas markets.
Experts warn the attacks could disrupt the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for global oil shipments, which could affect over 25% of the world’s oil supply and roughly one-fifth of natural gas shipments. Carole Nakhle, CEO of energy advisory firm Crystol Energy, said the biggest market risk is not just reduced Iranian output, but possible attacks on energy infrastructure in neighboring countries, which could cause higher price volatility.
Iran’s energy sector has faced years of sanctions, which limited foreign investment and access to technology. Major projects, including South Pars Phase 11, were abandoned by international companies due to US restrictions, leaving domestic firms like Petropars to continue development.
President Trump acknowledged that the operation could cost American lives, calling it “a noble mission” to secure global energy stability and prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.
