Botswana Names Akinwole II Omoboriowo as Vice Chairman of Power Corporation

Botswana has appointed Nigerian energy leader Akinwole II Omoboriowo as a Board Member and Vice Chairman of the Botswana Power Corporation (BPC), signaling a push to strengthen the nation’s energy sector.

Omoboriowo, who is currently Chairman and CEO of GENESIS Energy Group, brings over 20 years of experience in power infrastructure, energy finance, and utility-scale project development across Africa and the United Kingdom. His career includes leading projects totaling more than 780MW, with a development pipeline exceeding 4.5GW.

The appointment comes as Botswana works to stabilize electricity supply, expand renewable energy, and position itself as a net exporter of clean energy within the Southern African Power Pool (SAPP).

BPC’s ongoing “Maduo 26” transformation strategy, launched in 2022, aims to enhance operational efficiency, financial performance, and regional competitiveness-priorities aligned with Omoboriowo’s expertise in energy markets, infrastructure development, and capital investment.

Botswana’s coal-based electricity generation has faced fluctuations in recent years, highlighting the need for improved system stability. Omoboriowo’s role is expected to focus on governance, corporate restructuring, investment mobilization, and translating infrastructure development into measurable outcomes.

In a LinkedIn statement, Omoboriowo expressed gratitude for the trust placed in him by President Advocate Duma Boko and Minister of Minerals and Energy Bogolo Joy Kenewendo, describing the position as a chance to contribute to a key national institution at a pivotal time.
