NUPRC Targets Increase in Domestic Gas Supply

The Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) has stepped up efforts to grow gas availability within Nigeria as demand for cooking gas continues to rise across the country.

This push gained momentum during a meeting between the commission’s chief executive, Oritsemeyiwa Eyesan, and the Managing Director of Nigeria LNG Limited (NLNG), Adeleye Falade, where both parties discussed strategies to prioritise local supply.

Eyesan said the regulator has been advancing reforms designed to support the Federal Government’s gas expansion drive and to make operations in the upstream sector smoother for investors. She noted that since late last year, the commission has focused on removing administrative bottlenecks and aligning regulatory processes with the Petroleum Industry Act.

According to her, regular engagement with industry players now helps the commission identify challenges early and resolve them before they affect performance, adding that improved government responsiveness is beginning to reflect in renewed investor confidence.

She described the Federal Government’s Decade of Gas as a practical plan already delivering results by encouraging greater domestic use of gas while sustaining export opportunities. Eyesan urged operators to complement these efforts through stronger compliance and performance.

Falade, in his remarks, said NLNG has adjusted its supply approach in response to surging local demand for liquefied petroleum gas. He disclosed that the company now allocates its entire LPG output to the Nigerian market to help stabilise supply and improve access for households.

Looking ahead, he said the ongoing NLNG Train 7 Project will significantly expand production capacity when it becomes operational next year, enabling NLNG to meet both domestic and international needs more effectively.

The renewed collaboration reflects broader efforts by the government to position gas as a cleaner and more affordable energy option for homes and businesses nationwide.
