Anambra Introduces New Electricity Regulations to Improve Power Supply

The Anambra State Electricity Regulatory Commission (ASERC) has unveiled a new set of regulations designed to strengthen electricity governance, enhance consumer protection, and encourage private sector investment in the state’s power sector.

The regulatory framework, which consists of four newly approved laws, was formally presented at the Old Government House in Awka. The initiative forms part of the state’s broader efforts to reform its electricity market and improve access to reliable power.

Speaking during the presentation, ASERC Chairman, Prof. Frank Nwoye Okafor, said the commission is responsible for overseeing the state’s electricity market and ensuring that industry operators align with the government’s electricity development strategy.

According to him, the newly adopted regulations are intended to create a more transparent and efficient electricity system that benefits consumers, investors, and service providers alike.

Okafor explained that the regulations were developed after extensive consultations with stakeholders and industry experts. He noted that the framework establishes clearer licensing procedures, safeguards consumer interests, and provides incentives for responsible investment in the state’s electricity sector.

He added that the measures demonstrate the state’s commitment to creating an enabling environment for economic growth through improved electricity services.

The four regulatory instruments introduced by the commission include the Business Rules Regulation, Customer Protection Regulation, Licensing Regulation, and Investment Regulation. Together, they are expected to provide guidance for market operations, strengthen accountability, and attract new investments into the sector.

The ASERC chairman also urged stakeholders, including investors and industry participants, to work closely with the commission to ensure the successful implementation of the reforms and the development of a sustainable electricity market in Anambra State.

The commission believes the new regulations will support the state’s goal of achieving a more reliable and competitive electricity sector while expanding opportunities for economic development.
