Syria has officially started receiving natural gas from Azerbaijan, marking a significant step in energy cooperation between the two nations. The launch ceremony for the new gas supply route took place in the Turkish city of Kilis, where Syrian Energy Minister Mohammed Al-Bashir confirmed the development to journalists.
Although the pipeline system connecting Azerbaijan to Syria through Türkiye is capable of delivering up to 6 million cubic meters of gas per day, current plans aim to transport 3.4 million cubic meters daily during the initial phase.
Minister Al-Bashir praised Azerbaijan’s support, describing the project as a direct outcome of recent high-level discussions between the two countries’ leaders. He emphasized that the gas supply is expected to enhance Syria’s electricity generation and serve the broader goal of improving living conditions for its citizens.
“This is just the beginning,” Al-Bashir said, hinting at broader collaboration in the future. He noted that discussions have already taken place with Azerbaijani Economy Minister Mikayil Jabbarov regarding potential Azerbaijani investments in Syria.
Technical teams from both sides are expected to carry out mutual visits in the coming months to explore further projects.
