Chevron to Expand Gorgon LNG Project with $2 Billion Investment

Chevron’s Australian unit has approved a A$3 billion (US$2 billion) expansion of the Gorgon LNG project off Western Australia’s northwest coast. Known as “Gorgon Stage 3,” the project will tap additional offshore gas fields to extend the life of the existing LNG facilities on Barrow Island.

The expansion will link the Geryon and Eurytion gas fields to Gorgon using new subsea pipelines, with six wells planned across the two fields. The project received environmental approval last month after a public consultation process that began in August 2024.

Chevron operates the Gorgon joint venture alongside ExxonMobil and Shell, who collectively hold over 97% of the project, while Japanese firms Osaka Gas and JERA and U.S.-based MidOcean hold the remaining stakes.

In addition to supplying LNG for export, Gorgon Stage 3 will provide domestic gas for Western Australian households and industries, supporting the state’s 15% local gas reservation policy. The facility currently produces up to 300 terajoules of gas per day for domestic use and 15.6 million tons of LNG annually.

Chevron plans to drill up to 40 wells across seven fields, potentially extending Gorgon’s production life to 2070. The expansion highlights the company’s commitment to maintaining Australia’s LNG output while balancing export and domestic energy needs.
