China’s Haiyang Shiyou 301 has completed the world’s largest single ship-to-ship liquefied natural gas (LNG) refueling operation in Hong Kong, marking a major milestone in the region’s growing green shipping capabilities.
The massive LNG bunkering vessel, owned by state oil giant China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC), delivered 4,300 tons of LNG to a large German container ship over an 8.5-hour operation. The record-setting transfer occurred on June 10 during cargo loading and unloading activities in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.
“This marks the largest single LNG refueling operation ever conducted in Hong Kong,” CNOOC said in a statement. “It effectively boosts the port’s refueling service capabilities.”
The Haiyang Shiyou 301, with a capacity of 30,000 cubic meters, is currently the world’s largest LNG carrier and bunkering vessel. The mission reinforces Hong Kong’s role as a key LNG bunkering hub for international voyages, with more than 5,000 vessels docking annually.
“LNG bunkering is gaining momentum worldwide due to its environmental advantages over traditional marine fuels,” the company added.
CNOOC currently holds international bunkering permits across seven major Chinese ports, including Shenzhen and Ningbo, expanding the nation’s influence in clean maritime energy supply.
