An investigation is currently ongoing after a fatal workplace accident claimed the life of a contractor at the Egbin Power plant in Lagos State during underwater maintenance work.
The incident occurred on Tuesday, April 28, 2026, while the contractor, who was working as a diver, was carrying out routine maintenance at the facility’s lagoon-based pump system.
According to preliminary information, a pump is believed to have activated unexpectedly while the operation was in progress, trapping the worker and causing fatal injuries.
Following the accident, operations in the affected section of the plant were immediately halted as safety procedures were activated. The disruption later expanded, leading to a temporary shutdown of the entire facility.
The incident also caused the plant to be disconnected from the national electricity grid, with reports indicating that it recorded no power generation for at least two consecutive days.
Management of Egbin Power Plc confirmed the incident, expressing condolences to the family of the deceased and describing the event as tragic. The company said emergency protocols were triggered immediately and relevant authorities were notified.
Officials added that they are cooperating with investigators to determine exactly what led to the accident, while a full safety review of operations at the plant has begun.
Egbin Power, which is Nigeria’s largest electricity generation facility with an installed capacity of 1,320MW, emphasized that it remains committed to maintaining strict safety standards for both staff and contractors.
Meanwhile, the shutdown has contributed to power supply disruptions in parts of Lagos and other areas connected to the national grid, as the system adjusts to the temporary loss of output from the plant.
