The Dangote Group has signed a major technology and services agreement with Honeywell International as part of its plan to scale the capacity of the Dangote Refinery to 1.4 million barrels per day by 2028.
The partnership is expected to support the construction of a second single-train unit and strengthen the refinery’s ability to process a wider variety of crude grades. Industry sources indicate the value of the deal could surpass $250 million, depending on the scope of work.
Honeywell will supply catalysts, specialised equipment, and process technologies aimed at boosting efficiency and enabling the facility to handle more complex crude blends. The collaboration also includes licensing Honeywell’s Oleflex technology, which will help Dangote raise its polypropylene output to an estimated 2.4 million metric tons per year.
The refinery, which currently operates at a nameplate capacity of 650,000 barrels per day and is ranked as the world’s largest single-train facility, is undergoing phased upgrades. Earlier this year, the company announced plans to raise throughput to 700,000 barrels per day by the end of 2025.
Once the second unit is completed, the combined facility would be capable of processing nearly all of Nigeria’s current crude production, positioning the refinery as a major player in both domestic supply and exports.
Honeywell previously supplied key components for the refinery in 2017 through its UOP division, including regeneration systems and high-performance equipment used in crude processing.
The expansion marks one of Dangote’s most ambitious steps yet toward establishing a world-leading petroleum refining complex and reducing Nigeria’s long-standing dependence on imported fuel.
