Dangote Promises Major Shakeup in Nigeria’s Oil Sector

Aliko Dangote, President of Dangote Group and founder of the Dangote Refinery, has hinted at a sweeping transformation coming to Nigeria’s downstream oil and gas sector — one he says will be a “major shakedown.”

Speaking after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s visit to the 650,000-barrel-per-day Dangote Refinery in Lekki, Lagos State, Dangote remained tight-lipped about the details but signaled bold changes ahead.

“Now that the President has visited and he has given us additional energy, we will inform you; you will hear from us soon, and that will be one of the major shakedowns in the entire country,” Dangote told journalists.

He clarified that the move wouldn’t focus on petrol price reduction, stating, “It is not the reduction of price; it will be the total overhaul of the downstream.”

President Tinubu hailed the multibillion-dollar refinery as a “massive investment” and a key milestone in Nigeria’s path toward industrialisation.

Since October 2024, the refinery began rolling out premium motor spirit (PMS), which has already led to a drop in Nigeria’s fuel imports. The industry now watches closely as Dangote prepares to unveil the next chapter of Nigeria’s oil evolution.
