Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) has stepped up its battle against vandalism, illegal connections, and energy theft in Lagos and Ogun States, achieving two recent convictions and arraigning two additional suspects.
In a statement by Mr. Babatunde Lasaki, EKEDC’s General Manager of Corporate Communications and Strategy, the company reaffirmed its zero-tolerance policy towards offenses that threaten power infrastructure and disrupt electricity supply.
On March 13, 2025, Mr. Christopher Osayi was sentenced to two months imprisonment by Hon. A.O. Alagbon of Tinubu Magistrates’ Court for willfully destroying electrical equipment in Lekki Phase 1. Mr. Lasaki stated, “Acts of vandalism and theft targeting electrical infrastructure constitute economic sabotage and directly threaten the stability of power supply in the region.”
Similarly, former security guard David Ndueso was sentenced to three months imprisonment at Ajah Magistrates’ Court for attempting to steal a 600-meter cable from EKEDC’s storage facility.
“This conviction highlights our commitment to stringent security and zero tolerance for staff misconduct,” Mr. Lasaki added.Meanwhile, two more suspects, Mr. Babatunde Opeyemi and Mr. Idowu Raji, are currently arraigned for vandalizing a transformer in Yaba, with their case adjourned to June 25, 2025.
Mr. Lasaki urged the public to remain vigilant, encouraging the reporting of suspicious activities through official whistle-blower channels. “We appreciate the ongoing cooperation of customers, community leaders, and security agencies.
Their support is critical in protecting power infrastructure and ensuring a reliable electricity supply.”
EKEDC continues investing in technology and community engagement to combat energy theft and safeguard the power network, warning that offenders will face full legal consequences.
