The Enugu State Electricity Regulatory Commission (EERC) has ordered MainPower Electricity Distribution Company to refund over 20,000 customers who were overbilled for electricity in April 2025.
The directive was issued following a detailed investigation by the commission, which uncovered widespread violations in estimated billing practices.
“The commission has issued an Order to MainPower to refund the affected customers the overbilled units for energy consumed in April 2025,” EERC said in a statement signed by Chairman Chijioke Okonkwo and Commissioner for Market Operations, Reuben Okoye.
The commission revealed that the list of affected customers has been published on its official website and directed MainPower to complete all refunds by the July 2025 billing cycle. Failure to comply will attract a daily fine of ₦500,000, as stipulated under the Enugu State Electricity Law 2023.
EERC disclosed that it had been monitoring MainPower’s billing patterns since October 2024 and had issued multiple warnings that went unheeded.
“The commission recently reviewed MainPower’s April 2025 estimated report and observed that the degree of violation of the caps on estimated billing had further deteriorated from 24% in February and March to 34% in April,” the commission stated.
Customers who do not receive their refunds by the deadline have been advised to contact the commission via email at [email protected] or call 09122642755 for assistance.
